SHEATHING PLATES
COPPER SHEATHING PLATES For centuries, seamen searched for a coating that would stop the damage caused by marine organisms. They used concoctions made of pitch, tallow, sulfur, horse hair, sand an ground glass. Lead sheets fastened with iron nails were tried in the early 18th century, but the lead quickly corroded away in seawater. In the late 1750's, the British Admiralty started using copper sheathing plates fastened with iron nails. Although the nails corroded, the copper plates stood up well. The final breakthrough came with the use of copper nails. MS-0979 (7 X 18 MM) 50-PK-PRICE: MS-0982 (5 X 15 MM) 50-PK-PRICE: MS-1978 (6 X 12 MM) 50-PK-PRICE: |

SHIPS BELL
SHIPS BELL The bell was the focal point of the ship's daily routine. A 24 hour day was divided into five 4 hour "watches," plus two 2 hour "dog watches" between 4 and 8 p.m. Each watch was timed with a half hour sand glass. The first time the glass was turned, the bell was struck once. The second time, the bell was stuck twice and so on to eight "bells", denoting the end of the watch. MS-0424 -3/8 2-PK. CHAIN Chain replaced rope anchor cable in the early 19th century. Soon it was used aboard warships and large merchantmen in place of certain types of standing rigging, such as guys, pendants and bobstays. By mid-century, it was also used on most square rigged vessels for topsail sheets. OAR LOCKS Though used on private and commercial small craft, orlocks were not normally found on warship boats. The boats of sailing men-o-war had a vertical plank around the sides of the boat atop the gunwale. This had square slots, called rowlocks, into which the oars were fitted. LASER-CUT BASSWOOD-BREAD/BUTTER CONSTRUCTION A plank-on-frame kit this small would be too difficult to assemble, so we developed a bread & butter kit! The hull is created by layering a number of laser cut basswood pieces on top of one another. A little filing and sanding gives you the final shape.
